Help for Distanced ‘Dos: Hair Care at Home from Orlo Salon

Tame Your Distanced ‘Do

Now that we’ve stocked the pantry, checked in on loved ones and settled into WFH and homeschool, let’s talk about the state of our strands. Pushing off that appointment now seems radically ill-advised—but you’re not alone. Help is on the way: home hair advice from Orlo Salon’s Creative Director Joe Martino.

Destress Your Strands

A little extra scalp love goes a long way toward keeping hair healthy right now. Martino’s personal favorite scalp exfoliator is by Christophe Robin, but this one by L’Oreal one also works if you need a drugstore option. You may also want to deep condition once weekly with something like this from Orlo founder, Orlando Pita, or one of Kerastase’s legendary masks

As far as supplements go, Martino has seen this one work on women from runways to real life.

Hair Care for the Boys (and Kids)

A video chat with your stylist could provide real-time coaching for home cuts. And yes, Martino walked a dad through his son’s haircut the other night. Is it perfection? No, but the hair is out of his eyes and he should be set for another month. Martino also highly recommends a clipper like this one with a guard, so it’s impossible to go too short (their site has a lot of helpful videos). Martino recommends following around the edges of the hairline and using a smaller trimmer to go over ears and clean up the neck.

Go Dark

Many stylists can safely mix a client’s color and ship it (then talk them through the process), so this might be an opportunity to support your favorite salon. If that’s not an option, here’s a quick, J. Lo-approved fix for your roots. Martino suggests wearing hair down for video calls or virtual hangs—so only your part is exposed.  For a multi-day fix, this tint is a gem. If you’re bold enough to try a DIY, Madison Reed has a sophisticated matching system based on your uploaded photo, and picture-based (who reads all that fine print?) instructions.

F It, Go Gray

Ready to make the leap? If you have darker hair, you may choose to ease into it, as the contrast will be much sharper (Or just give away all the fs and go forth!). Using a temporary color like this one for a period of time will give the gray a chance to grow out for a less severe look.

My Highlights Are Now Low Lights

Unfortunately, Martino says you might have to wait it out. Your stylist may be able to mix a gloss for you to help brighten your tresses. The temporary tint might also be an option for you. But back away from the aluminum foil! You’ll be glad you waited on the other side.
